Baggy pants first became popular in the 1990s and early 2000’s due to the hip hop influences at the time. Hip hop was becoming the most popular type of music AND digital media was booming for the first time. Not only were popular rappers, breakdancers, and skateboarders wearing baggy pants, but music videos and trends were spreading via MTV and the internet.
You might be thinking… but why did it come back? Well, when it comes to fashion trends, what goes around comes back around. Trends tend to recycle themselves every few decades. Plus, comfort became a top priority for shoppers during the pandemic and most people find looser fitting denim much more comfortable than structured, body contouring jeans.
