Our faves from NYDJ, Levi’s Style & Co, and more.
As women, we are bombarded at every corner with retouched images of the *perfect body* (which, btw, doesn’t exist!). Here at Revelle, we’re over it. We hope you know that everything about your body is perfect and beautiful just the way it is. Even the pesky insecurities that make you feel self-conscious from time to time.
And while we wish it was easier to celebrate our own bodies for the way they are, we know certain clothes just make us feel more confident. And when we aren’t worried about our insecurities, we feel more beautiful and more ourselves… And that’s what matters most!
So today we’re talking about hip dips. What they are, why they’re totally normal, and how you can minimize their effect by wearing certain types of jeans.
What Are Hip Dips?
Hip dips (also called violin hips) are the indents that many women have on each side of their body between the tops of their thighs and their hip bones. They are a little “dip” that appears on what looks like the side of your butt.
These indentations in the hip area tend to be more pronounced if you have high hips (commonly associated with a short torso), and therefore a larger “gap” between your hips and legs.
Above all, what you need to know is that it’s completely natural and common to have hip dips. In fact, almost all women (and people) have them!
Which Jeans Hide Hip Dips?
If you want to reduce the appearance of your hip dips, look for these qualities in jeans.
- High Waisted: Look for high rise jeans (or even mid rise jeans), insead of low rise. High waisted pants draw the eye higher up on your waist, so the eyes don’t linger on your hips.
- Looser Fitting Silhouettes: Just like body con dresses and pencil skirts, tight-fitting jeans (like skinny jeans and jeggings) hug your hip dips and make them more noticeable. To minimize their look, opt for looser jeans like mom jeans, relaxed straight leg jeans, boyfriend jeans, and wide leg jeans. Alternatively, if you love the look of tight jeans on top (and want to show off that booty!) go for flare or bootcut jeans. Flare and bootcut silhouettes draw the eye down and elongate your legs, so even though they are snug at the top, your hips won’t be the focal point.
8 Best Jeans For Hip Dips
Here at Revelle, we are big on finding clothes that fit and flatter your beautiful body the way it is. So, rather than squeezing into shapewear or doing excessive amounts of glute bridges and squats… we’ve rounded up eight pairs of jeans that will flatter and minimize the appearance of your hip dips.
We can’t think of a more perfect pair of hip-dip hiding jeans than these. Not only are they loose and comfortable (so they won’t cling to your hip dips), but they are perfect for the recent baggy jeans trend. Plus, they have a flattering and unique waistband. Safe to say we’re obsessed.
It doesn’t get more classic than this pair of boyfriend jeans. They have a high rise waistline and a small cuff at the bottom. They also come in a variety of blue and black shades. We can already picture these paired with a t-shirt and oversized cardigan in the colder months!
These straight leg jeans have a lot going on that we LOVE. They are a classic dark wash and they’re loose-fitting throughout (so they won’t hug those hip dips). Plus, they are cuffed at the bottom (which draws the eye away from the hip area.
Calling all petite ladies! These wide leg jeans are made with ultra-comfortable stretch denim (and they have a pull on waistband!). They also use NYDJ’s lift tuck technology to smooth and flatter curves.
While these jeans aren’t high waisted, they fit perfectly into the baggy, low-rise jeans trend. We love the cargo look and appreciate that they have side pockets (so they definitely won’t draw any attention to your hip indentations).
If you’re looking for a unique pair of jeans, these are for you. They come in a vintage-inspired brown color and have a flattering drawstring waistband. Since they’re loose fitting in the hips, they won’t draw attention to your hip dips (if anything, the cute drawstring bow will be the center of attention!).
We love a classic pair of distressed jeans. This pair has a raw hem, distressed knees, and comes in a versatile light blue color.
We’re fans of white jeans all year round and this ultra-high rise pair from Reformation is no exception. They have a relaxed straight leg silhouette (so they won’t hug your hip dips!). Since they have a classic, neutral look… we think these would be the perfect office jeans! Pair them with an oversized button down and tote for your next work event.
